Salming Trainers Review

rs1

Initial impression and style;

Taking these shoes out the box, the first thing I noticed was how light they were. I have worn many different brands of trail trainers now and these are among the lightest I have had. The construction is top quality. The style is very eye catching and the materials used are very hard wearing.

The next thing any “OCR goer” would look at is the tread depth and amount of lugs on the sole to see if the shoe is going to keep the amount of effort put in by the wearer aiding in momentum, not slipping backwards and the Element ticks this box very well with a great sole. The shoe has a big loop on the tongue and the heel to help get the shoe on. Around the heel and toe there is thick material which looks it will stick the harshest of beating by mud, waking it on walls, and stones bashing it.

 Rating: 4.5/5

1286036_6604_elements_31

The technical blurb;

Weight: 288g (size UK 9)

Drop: 4mm

“When adding the Elements model to our range we aimed at creating a performance off trail shoe which incorporates Salming´s running concept and principles. Elements enables you to run anywhere or swim for that matter and get the best out of you. The outsole provides exceptional traction on both wet and dry surfaces. Elements has a more roomy toe box compared to its trail sibling, the Salming Trail, in order to provide a possibility for the fore foot to expand properly in the landing phase, making it more effective in a biomechanic perspective.”

1286036_6604_elements_41

Price;

Direct from Salming – £110

Best price I could find was £98.99

Initially this sort of price tag will put many people off as it is rather steep but when compared to the likes of the Irock 2’s they match on price and are very similar in construction and style. Knowing more about the trainer now, I think the price is justified.

Rating: 4/5

OCR suitability/ Functionality;

Having worn these shoes now for training many times and at an OCR, they are fighting to be my go to trainers. A great fit for accurate foot placing on those tricky balance obstacles and rigs. The drainage is really good, after about 200-300 metres after a full submersion 90% of the water is gone and the grip is to the level when you place your foot on any mud, grass or gravel you know you won’t slip.

To my knowledge, Salming haven’t really broken into the OCR market yet but with these shoes and further models they will be up there with the market leaders. One thing that lets the shoe down for me is that when the shoe is stuck deep in thick mud your foot does slip out somewhat. I did try different lacing techniques and I have found one with the least movement so sticking with that.

Comfort wise, you really don’t know you are wearing them. They mould to your foot excellently and the cushioning is enough and not too much.

Rating: 4/5

PROS;

Very lightweight

Hard wearing

Very good grip

Great drainage

CONS;

Some issues in deep, thick mud.

Short laces

Overall;

I think these are great…in the right conditions. As with a set of race tyres you don’t put slicks on in the rain. These trainers are good if you know the conditions on the given race are muddy but not the sort of mud that will suck you down to your knees or more.

Overall rating: 4/5

RunFlex Sports Wear

11987186_726939037429182_7420180491075026739_n

Who are Runflex?

Runflex are a UK based company supplying products to customers all over the world. They produce a full range of compression clothing with both custom and premade designs.

They design products for people in all sporting pursuits to give some of the most customizable compression wear on the market. Runflex are a UK based company supplying products to customers across the globe.

The technical blurb;

“Our clothing is made from a tough non-woven material designed to have a natural feel and is manufactured with a seamless design. The 80% polyester 20% spandex material improves blood circulation for maximum performance. The material will resist ripping and tearing.

What level of compression do they provide?

There is currently much confusion amongst consumers in terms of comparing medical grade compression garments against sport
styled compression. Some of the medical grade compression garments which are worn for medical conditions record very high pressure levels and as such are not advisable for people with normal circulation. Our Compression garments are designed to be worn during exercise and over prolonged periods of time.”

0000252_always-with-a-smile-awas-long-sleeve-compression-base-layer_5501

Many people who compete in any given sport these days now wear some sort of compression or tight fitting clothing to aid in eliminating chaffing, quick drying, eliminate drag and sagging when wet.

Initial impression and style;

All Runflex products are made using complete panel designs, by which I mean they haven’t just got a logo on the arm, one on the chest etc, the logos and designs stretch the entire front/back and arms. Within a sport where people want to be part of a team or identify themselves in photos these products are great as they help you really stand out. They offer a wide range of products including compression long and short sleeve tops, leggings, calf guards, to casual more loose fitting shorts and hoodies. Designs can bespoke to you, your team or you can order off the shelf designs.

Rating: 4.5/5

Price;

Long sleeve compression top £54.50

Short sleeve compression top £49.50

Tech T-shirt £24.95

Compression leggings £54.50

Calf guards £25.50

Compression shorts £37.50

Casual hoodie £59.50

These prices are competitive within a very busy part of the sporting market; however I feel they are on par with some compression companies who people may side with having not heard of Runflex before. I think once people try the products, see design, feel the quality, and feel the benefits of the garments they will see that the price is fair.

Rating: 4/5

OCR suitability/ Functionality;

Having worn this product now on training runs, and three different OCR’s, I can say they show no signs of wear or abrasions. The stitching is all intact with only one small snag where I got caught on some barbed wire, but this would have happened in any clothing.

Runflex have a very good size guide on their website which really helps find the right size for you. As with any compression clothing I would say if you find yourself on the border of two sizes always order the smaller of the two as the bigger one will sag more when wet, plus the smaller one will show off your guns more. Returns are not an issue as long as clothing is in an unused condition (minus postage)

(The clothing in action at Judgement Day)

PROS;

Very comfortable

Bespoke designs

Stylish

Good way for race directors to advertise their races.

A UK business doing very well, and ever growing.

CONS;

Initially seem highly priced

Overall;

I really rate these products and their ability to cope with all OCR can throw at them. They look sleek, stylish do everything a compression product should do as well.

If you haven’t given Runflex clothing a go, I really suggest you give them a whirl, stick them on your Christmas list.

KitBrix – CityBrix

Who is KitBrix?

This isn’t the first time that Mudd Matters has mentioned this company. If you follow our reviews, you’ll see that we have previously done a review on the KitBrix bag. After that, we got our hands on a different product called ‘ CityBrix’.

I’ve trialled this innovative bag in several different scenarios at several different events and I absolutely can’t fault it. Genuinely, this is one of the best products that I have come across since Mudd Matters started!

So what is it and why is it so awesome? It’s probably easier for you to kick back, relax and watch this short video about it…

Click Here to view this magical ‘Mary Poppins’ bag.

That got your attention, didn’t it?! Now comes the technical bit.

The technical blurb;

“The latest bag has been designed to overcome the problem of carrying both gym, swim and work kit. The CityBrix has been designed to add convenience for commuter by splitting into two sections to allow easy access to both ‘work’ and ‘play’ compartments. It stores tablets / laptops (12″ comfortably) and paperwork safely, but it also features a robust, water-resistant compartment to keep a full sports kit and water bottle separate, and ready to use at any time. The play section of the bag has a 10-litre capacity and is lined with tarpaulin for water resistance while the upper ‘work’ compartment features 9.2L of open storage and a fur-lined protective compartment for a tablet.

Designed for those who need ultimate efficiency.”

Key Features

  1. All in one, no fuss “work and play” bag
  2. Wider straps to spread heavy loads for increased comfort and care
  3. Built in headphone access tunnel, keeping your gadget secure whilst allowing access to media
  4. Innovative design, including being able to unzip the middle section to make the bag into a 20l compartment.
  5. Robust and heavy duty whilst being lightweight
  6. Water-resistant
  7. Totally versatile

citybrix-1

 Price;

These retail at £89.00 and are worth every single penny.

There really isn’t anything more I can say about the price. They really are THAT good.

Rating: 10/10

OCR suitability/ Functionality;

The first time I used this was taking our son, Malakai to an OCR. I packed his kit (trainers, socks, skins, shorts, top, buff) in the bottom with a towel and a change of clothes in the top compartment with some snacks and his Nintendo DS in the lined pouch. I was surprised that there was loads of room left in both compartments. He said he found it really easy to use and liked that his wet, smelly kit was separate to his other clothes.

I have also used this bag for a weekend away when we travelled up to my sister in Nottingham and watched Steven doing a race. The bag carried my clothes, Malakai’s clothes, food/drink, my ipad and was still, super lightweight. I carried that bag around on my back for hours (whilst still pregnant) and it really didn’t hurt or cause me any discomfort.

Having used this bag in a range of situations now, I can say that it really is so versatile and will suit most situations that you would find yourself in. Personally, I prefer these to the KitBrix for my needs and I love that I can use it for ANY situation, not just OCR.

The CityBrix is perfect for those of us that like to hit the gym before work and hate carrying several bags. (Don’t act like you’ve never left your bag somewhere). This bag is absolutely perfect for you guys.

Commuters, you’ll love this too as you really can pack all you need. Pack your tablet for the boring commute, gym/swimming kit, a fresh change of clothes, your lunch, wallet, phone, everything. And rest assured this bag has the same outstanding quality that the original KitBrix does!

Rating: 10/10

PROS;

Very well made

Extremely organised

All in one bag

Stylish

Innovative

Top quality materials

Keeps your kit clean and dry

Lightweight

Carefully designed to care for carrying heavy weights safely

CONS;

Currently only available in one colour

Overall;

CityBrix is a hugely organised, innovative product made from quality materials and designed to suit a vast range of people and caters for most situations.

£89.00 may seem pretty expensive for a bag but considering that it is a “all in one” bag made from top quality materials that will not only last you a long time but for a range of activities, what more could you ask for?!

The only thing that lets this down a little is that there is currently only one design. I’d like to see them expand this range.

Overall rating: 9/10

Mypinnacle Nutrition

Who is My Pinnacle?

My Pinnacle nutrition produces all natural supplements to enhance both your health and your overall sports performance. Their range is ever growing but simply put they have a product for before activity, MyEdge, during product, MyEndurance and recovery also, MyRecovery. Recently added to their product range is MyGreens which is a great blend of fruit and veg.

Their mission;

“To achieve our best, in whatever physical sport we choose, requires dedication, training and most importantly, correct nutrition. Therefore we have developed a range of products that have been extensively researched using the latest sport and exercise science. With our products you get only what you need and nothing that you don’t. Like you, we care about what goes in our bodies and we have therefore utilised only the best quality ingredients available in the UK”

Initial impression;

Great pouch packaging, very convenient to take away with you in your kit bags to multiple race weekends. Having a resealable top they are easy to open and close. In a flooded market place this is up there with the more expensive brands, some may say it is well above their price range, I gave the range a whirl and I can safely say you get what you pay for; many other products are full of stuff you simply don’t need, and to the point, these products work. There are no fancy gimmicks or frills, whether you are a part time runner or a high end athlete

Cost;

Myedge – £45 for 10 servings

Myendurance – £60 for 25 servings

Myrecovery – £38 for 10 servings

Mygreens – £25 for 25 servings

Rating: 4/5

Taste/texture;

Myedge is great tasting, slightly sour (just like sour sweets, not unpalatable) drink that is to be consumed 45 minutes before your given sports activity. You can vary the amount of scoops you use dependant on the length of pursuit you are to undertake. I found that either using this product on a long road run or over a lengthy OCR the product helped to maintain a constant level of energy where others peak and drop suddenly.

Myedurance tastes very similar to myedge, just without the sourness, I would liken the taste to that of Lucazde sport. It is used during long sports activities to stop you “hitting the wall” by actively replacing your bodies muscle carbohydrate stores.

Myrecovery, now this is a game changer for me, after trying two or three other recovery products and thinking they really worked wonders. This product far outweighs them in the effect it has long term for my muscle recovery. I really notice the difference if I am silly enough not to take it after a hard work out, the achy rise from bed the next day really reminds me why I should take it.

Mygreens, now this for me is a product I have to down in one, I know the nutritional benefits of it so I know I should take it, the flavouring of it can’t really be helped so it is down in one and let the magic happen, haha.

Rating: 4.5/5

PROS

Tasted great

Natural flavourings

No Added extras

Small UK start up company

Available in different flavours

CONS

High end price

Overall rating;

These products really work well for me, if I had to choose a favourite I would say it was the ‘myrecovery’ as this helped with repairing muscle damage very effectively.

I was really chuffed with this product and will certainly buy more.

Overall Rating;

4.5/5

‘OCR Bears’ taking the OCR world by storm… Our review of ‘Maverick’ the bear.

Keri-Ann Daniels is the genius behind a freshly formed company that’s taking the OCR world by storm…OCR Bears!

Keri-Ann has over 30 years sewing experience so she knows a thing or two about what she’s doing and her skills are clear to see through her outstanding craftsmanship. Like many of us; she had an ever growing mound of t-shirts that she’d collected from completing OCR’s and had always wanted to make them into something a bit special. After this years’ Rat Race Dirty Weekender in May, Keri-Ann decided to start up her little company ‘OCR Bears’ and has seen it blossom substantially since.

Originally started as a sideline for a bit of an extra income, Keri-Ann now has orders coming in from all over the country and has even been approached by a very well known and respected OCR company, to be their official supplier of OCR Bears in the UK. (We can’t give you any details yet but they’re due to sign contracts next week!)  Not bad going for 3 months in business!

We were lucky enough to get our hands on one of these absolutely awesome bears. Ours is called ‘Maverick’ although our son has renamed him ‘Norman’. Norman is made from our Airfield Anarchy Afterburner tech tee. I chose this one for sentimental value and thought he’d look totally fricking awesome, which I’m sure you’ll agree – he does.

mav1

After placing an order we sent off the t-shirt and I absolutely cannot fault any part of the process. Once Keri-Ann had it, we got a message from her asking for a return address for our new friend to be sent home. She said it usually takes between 21-28 days and included free UK delivery.

Shortly after we got this message;

“Your hard earned shirt is now in pieces, it’s too late to change your mind, magic sticks will soon be waved to create your lovable masterpiece”

We also got a picture of a chopped up shirt and a few days later we were sent little teasers of the new addition to our family. Finally, we were notified that he was on his way via MyHermes. . This is where my excitement really kicked in and what amazing customer service!

OCR Bears

Norman arrived and I can’t explain how happy he made our little boy (and us). The attention to detail is second to none. He has a cute little scarf and his legs and arms are free to move about thanks to the buttons that they’re attached with. Not one stitch is out of place and it he is sewn together with great love and passion.

To be honest, when I was looking at prices of bears I thought “wow, some people just have money to burn” but honestly…so worth the cost. For the amount of work, love, care and customer service that goes into each bear, they are worth every penny and actually work out cheaper than some other companies offering bears.

Ocr Bears offer 3 different sizes to choose from:

Small £35

Medium £40

Large £45

Now, it’s a given that I wouldn’t be paying for each t-shirt to be turned into a bear as it’d be rather costly but they are ideal for presents and keepsakes. OCR Bears don’t just do OCR related bears as you can see below. I’d like to think that perhaps at Christmas I’ll be placing an order for a small bear for my niece using one of her old blankets or something. It’s something that’s totally personal to her and will last her for years to come.

ocrbearsmario

OCR bears are also looking into expanding their product range but aren’t giving anything away just yet, all very hush hush. Personally, I can’t wait to see what Keri-Ann comes up with next!

You can find OCR Bears at Mud 7 as part of team Zeus. I urge you to go and have a look, you won’t be disappointed. If you just can’t wait that long then you can order your very own OCR Bear using the below links.

OCR Bears’ Facebook page;

Or direct to their online shop:

Thank you Keri-Ann for Norman, we wish you every success with the business. Keep being awesome.

Dryrobe

What is a Dryrobe?

Essentially, it’s a changing robe, not just any changing robe though…oh no! Dry robes are like the superheroes of the OCR world. They are hard wearing, rugged, well designed and waterproof. Dryrobe’s were originally designed for surfers to be able to change into their wetsuits without someone holding a towel round them (like your mum used to when you were a kid on the beach).

Some people use them as an additional winter layer as they are lined with a synthetic ‘sheep’s fleece’ like material which traps lots of warm air to keep you warm. This inner material also serves as a very absorbent layer, drying the user when they are wet through after any sporting activity.

The robes come in four different sizes, adults medium, standard and XXL. They are also available in a child’s XS. All of the robes are supposed to fit loosely, as you do the zip up when in it, then bring your arms back inside to be able to change within it.

The technical blurb;

“Made for changing sports clothing or wetsuits outdoors. The dryrobe® has a waterproof & windproof exterior shell fabric & a synthetic lamb’s wool lining that dries you & keeps you warm. The design allows you to pull your arms in through the sleeves & get changed inside it. You can get a wetsuit, swimsuit or tri suit, on or off, easily, while staying warm, dry & fully protected from the elements.”

Key Features

  1. Waterproof & windproof outer layer
  2. Warm ‘lamb’s wool’ lining
  3. Machine washable
  4. Varying coloured linings
  5. Custom logos available
  6. Internal pocket

Price;

Direct from Dryrobe, an advanced short sleeve garment is £74.99 and their premium garment, being the long sleeved robe, is £119.99.If you want to splash the cash, you can have a custom designed robe for £194.99 but if you really can’t stretch your budget, Nuclear races have an offer were you can purchase an embroidered Nuclear Dryrobe for £115 including a free race (t’s & c’s apply), worth considering as this gives you a £60 race for free.

You can also volunteer as a marshal at Nuclear races and as a reward you can get a Nuclear Dryrobe instead of a future race ticket (other races do offer similar). Also available is a towel robe for £29.99. As they are quite expensive I’d advise getting yours personalised in some way as this would minimise theft.

Rating: 4/5

OCR suitability/ Functionality;

I’ve used this product now for just over a year – at roughly 35 OCRs and it shows no sign of any wear or deterioration. Throughout its life it has been abused slightly with the amount of mud it has seen, having the amazing British weather thrown at it, and it has stood every test. When not being used as a changing robe pre or post race it can double as a great picnic blanket. For those forgetful people amongst us, I have also seen it used as a sleeping bag.

One thing that is missing from the robe is a loop inside so you can hang it up, you can use the hood but this often ends up with the robe touching the floor as it is long. The washing instruction from the manufactures state the product is machine washable, but to try and limit the amount of times you do wash it as it will affect the waterproofing ability the more times it is washed. Instructions do come with each garment, however in the time I have had mine, I have had it covered in mud, and to clean it I hang it over the bath and use the shower to wash it down, then leave it to drip dry.

Rating: 4.5/5

 IMG_1177

 PROS;

Very warm

Windproof

Waterproof

Hard wearing

Versatile

Attention to detail in design – For those of you who have wondered, the zip on the inside seam is for easy access if you are having any embroidery done to your robe.

CONS;

Occasionally problematic zip

No internal loop for hanging

Overall;

A piece of clothing that once you have tried or purchased you will wonder how you ever did without it. I would suggest looking out for this product at your next sporting venture and ask someone who has one what they think of it. You will be drawn in by its quality and will probably find space in the next month’s sports budget to stretch to one.

KitBrix

What are KitBrix?

A tough, rugged, well designed, connectable, fully waterproof, multi-sport discipline bag. This holdall will organise and care for your kit in which ever sport you are undertaking. You can link one to another and repeat this as many times as you like, each ‘Brix’ comes with a shoulder strap so you can use just one to create a duffle bag style strap over one shoulder. Those buying two or more can then fix the shoulder straps to the buckles to create a back pack style.

I have two KitBrix in two different colours. Each bag has a slip pocket on the end to slip in a picture card of the given sport that bag will be used for. These cards come in swimming, cycling, OCR, first aid, a mechanics spanner or running. This is a very handy way of distinguishing which bag is which as I soon forgot which colour bag had what kit in it.

I am somebody that is guilty of always over packing whether it is for an ocr or for training sessions. I have trialled these KitBrix at both and found that one is perfect for smaller sessions and two was adequate for an OCR. I used two of them at Rate Race Dirty Weekend and found that, personally, I’d have been  better off with three (as I over-pack and didn’t like having to empty a bag to find what i was after) but for the average person they are great and hold everything that you need from trainers, to first aid kit.

IMG_1111.JPG

The technical blurb;

“The original KitBrix bag is modular and can connect to other KitBrix to save you time in transit and travel. The bag is designed to ‘stand up’ to enable you access the bag easily and give you complete visibility of your entire pack list ensuring you have complete control over your kit and ready access to what you need to support your training or competition day. The benefit of having your kit in different, easily marked sections is simple…it keeps you ready at all times at a moments notice, taking the stress out of kit preparation and keeping you in a state of calm, military like readiness. Easily stored at home, in garage and in car, the build quality of KitBrix is second to none – your kit is expensive, KitBrix will keep it safe and secure for when you need it.”

You could use a standard sports bag to take your kit to any given sports event, but I look at it like this, if I spend decent money on the kit to use for my sport I want a bag then can equally protect and organise my kit so I know things are in order, dry kit is dry when I want it.

Key Features

  1. Rubberised waterproof bottom
  2. Complete washable (wet cloth)
  3. Waterproof zip
  4. Sport defined logos
  5. Multi modular design
  6. Fully waterproof inside pockets
  7. Double layer construction for added durability

 IMG_1110[1].JPG

Price;

Direct from KitBrix the bags are £48.00 individually, if you purchase two they work out cheaper at £90 for the pair and you’ve guessed it, if you get three it’s cheaper still, at £132. The bags come in array of colours, pink, blue, black, grey, yellow, white and camouflage. Some may say the price is on the high side for a bag but this bag will last you the same time frame as two or three cheap ones from your local sports shop and given its construction and materials it is well worth the money when at the coldest and wettest winters day your clothes will be dry when you need them.

Rating: 4/5

OCR suitability/ Functionality;

Having used this product now at four different OCR’s, it shows no signs of wear or tear. The stitching is all intact and the zips are better now than they were when they are new as they have bedded in and the material flexes more.

As the bottom of each bag is rubberised and padded it is like a duck to water at an OCR as it loves mud, the zips have large pull toggles on them so even at the dirtiest you will ever be the bags can always be accessed.

On a slightly negative note when trying to get into both bags at the same time, one lid would flap out of the way, however on opening the second bag the lid would then flap over covering the first. A minor point, but something that does hinder access to multiple bags at the same time.

Rating: 4/5

 IMG_1108

PROS;

Very well made

Stylish

Top quality materials

Keeps your kit clean and dry

Very organised in multi sport disciplines

Multi modular design

CONS;

Top lids need to oppose each other

Overall;

A very high end product with quality materials, brilliant finishing, and designed with user’s needs paramount. I would suggest looking out for this product at your next sporting venture and ask someone who has one what they think of it. You will be drawn in by its quality and will probably find space in the next month’s sports budget to stretch to one. The price is the tipping point though and will most likely be a something put on their Birthday or Christmas present list.

Stnky Bags

What are Stnky Bags?

A very ingenious piece of kit that will make you wonder why you had never had in your kit bag beforehand. They are a double ended zipped, waterproof bag for your wet and dirty kit. They say a picture paints a thousand words so I’ll leave it the handy diagram below to explain;

The technical blurb;

“Stnky bags are a great way to sort, store, carry wash and dry everything from sweaty gym kit, clothes when you travel, muddy trainers, swimming kit and just about anything else the gets dirty, wet or sweaty!  You can lock in that smelly, dirty kit and then when you are ready to wash it you don’t need to touch that smelly stuff, just turn the bag inside out and throw it in the wash, dry it and your ready to go again!.”

Yes you could use a carrier bag as many people do, but these products come in to different sizes so you can fit your trainers in XL one and as you are washing your kit you wash the bag, over time you will save money on wasting carrier bags and throwing them in the bin.

Key Features

  1. Look after your kit
  2. Save time
  3. Keep organised
  4. Easy washing
  5. Clean and tidy
  6. Toggle loops for hanging bag

Price;

Direct from Stnky Bags the regular size bags are £22.50 and the XL ones are £26.50, you can get them printed up with Dirty Dozen logos now too. I think this product is very high end and you get what you pay for, although pricey for some.

Rating: 4/5

OCR suitability/ Functionality;

Having used this product now at four different OCR’s, it shows no signs of wear or tear. The stitching is all intact and the zip still works as well as ever.

On the topic of the zips, there is no clear way of distinguishing between which zip is which, this is a very small point and I easily rectified it by attaching a small key ring to the ‘open end’ of the mesh bag.

Rating: 4/5

PROS;

Very well made

Stylish

Keeps your wet kit away from your dry kit

CONS;

Needs to be clearer, which zip to open

Overall;

I think is bag is a great idea for any sport and fits into the daily commuters bag very easily, its sleek and designed well. It is functional and very ergonomic. The loops are great for hanging it from a washing line in the garden to hose down your kit before throwing it in the washing machine.

Protein Bars – Battle Oats

Who are Battle Oats?

Battle Oats produce gluten free protein flapjacks made using fine English oats, butter, coconut oil, protein isolate and other 100% natural ingredients. The bars are handmade and oven baked in the UK in small batches keeping that homemade feel.

Initial impression;

Great packaging with small characters in various outdoor pursuits climbing on or hanging off the ‘Battle Oats’ brand name. It also includes key protein values on the front.

Cost;

Box of 12 bars £16.99

Equating to £1.42 per bar

Working out to be a reasonably priced, tasty protein hit.

Rating: 4/5

Taste/texture;

I had a mixed box with all the flavours, white chocolate coconut, cinnamon and raisin, dark choc chip, cranberry and blueberry fusion and my firm favourite double chocolate brownie. The texture of them is similar to Rice Krispie Squares; other breakfast bars are available, ha-ha. All amazing.

CONS

Bars are slightly large to consume during activities, such as multi lap endurance races.

2XU MOMENTUM 7″ 2 IN 1 ICEX SHORT

2xu logo

Who are 2XU?

2XU “Two Times You” was launched in Australia 2005 and has since graced the bodies of multiple world champion athletes, become the official compression partner to some of the world’s best teams, and been the secret recovery weapon to most pro basketball and football teams.

Backed by and working alongside world leading institutions and sports scientists, this company knows what they’re doing when it comes to their superior products.

The technical blurb;

“With a flattering design, this 2XU garment is built with moisture wicking VAPOR+ fabric and water resistance and EXTREME MESH panels to ventilate key sweat regions. Engineered with Compression PWX ICE fabric for a cooling inner layer and powerful compression muscle support to the upper leg to reduce muscle oscilation, damage and fatigue for greater performance.”

2xushort

Many people who wear a compression short usually wear a looser fitting short over the top for aesthetics – to retain some dignity, or for a little more cover in those cooler months. These (and others on the market) are a 2 in 1 combo comprising of a tight compression liner with a loose standard short sewn together at the waist.

Key Features

  1. VAPOR+ silicone impregnated water resistant yarn.
  2. EXTREME MESH side panelling for ventilation.
  3. Moisture wicking and highly breathable.
  4. Minimal cling for comfort.
  5. Reflective trims for safety.
  6. Rear centre zip pocket for storage.
  7. Adjustable drawstring waistband for secure fit.

Initial impression and style;

The lining short comes down to just above my knee with the over short hanging to the same length when dry and stood still. When the shorts are wet and I’m running in them the outer shorts tend to ride up slightly but not excessively.

Finish detailing is the “2XU” logo on the front of the left leg and an “X” on the side of the left leg, subtle styling and not in your face. They come in 4 colours, black/black, grey/grey, black/orange, black/blue

Rating: 4.5/5

Price;

Direct from 2XU UK the shorts are £60, so as a pair of shorts go they could seem quite pricey. However, let’s say you pay £30-£40 on mid-range compression shorts and £20-£30 on a pair of decent over shorts, then these come in around the same price. Don’t get me wrong you can get tight fitting shorts with loose running shorts much cheaper but I believe it’s about the quality and you get what you pay for.

Rating: 3.5/5

OCR suitability/ Functionality;

Having worn this product now at three different OCR’s, I can say they show no signs of wear or abrasions. The stitching is all intact and the zip still works as well as ever.

On the topic of the zip: it can be really awkward to undo while running as it is on the back of the shorts and to get your arm round to unzip it becomes difficult when negotiating challenging terrain. Previous 2XU shorts have had the pocket within the compression short as a simple slip pocket. Personally, I prefer the zip pocket as it keeps your gels/sweets secure and then the empty packets after you have used them too. Perhaps a small zip pocket on the side waist would be better?

PROS;

Very comfortable

Legs felt less fatigued during and after OCR’s

Stylish

Keeps your privates, private

A very well established, leading company backed by the best in the business

CONS;

Zip located in awkward position

Overall;

I really rate these shorts and their ability to cope with all OCR can throw at them. They look sleek, stylish do everything a compression short should do along with preserving your modesty.

If you haven’t given 2-in-1 shorts a go yet these are a cracking pair to start you off with.
